I often wonder what was in Bill Deramus' mind in 1966 when he had KCS order 14 SD40's from EMD all painted into a new white scheme. The story I was always told was visibility and they sure were, especially when they were not very well taken cared of.
During the lean 70's and 80's paint jobs were unheard of and it shows in this 1983 shot taken at Joplin Missouri looking south.
The area is totally developed now and looks totally different than depicted here.
